Chill glass (optional)

If you prefer a cold shot, place the shot glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice cubes for 30–60 seconds, then discard the ice before pouring.

Prepare the lime. Roll the quartered lime on the countertop under the heel of your hand to release juices, then set the lime quarter aside for licking/squeezing after the shot.

Salt the back of your hand (optional traditional method). Lightly wet the skin between your thumb and index finger with the lime quarter, then sprinkle the coarse salt over the wet area so it adheres. Alternatively, rim the shot glass: rub the lime around the rim and dip the rim into a shallow plate of coarse salt.

Pour the tequila. Measure and pour 1 oz reposado tequila into the chilled shot glass.

Execute the shot. Lick the salt from your hand (or the rim), quickly tip the shot glass and drink the tequila in one smooth motion, then immediately bite or suck the lime quarter to balance the spirit's heat and bring brightness.

If you'd like a small follow-up sip to mellow the palate, combine 2 oz fresh grapefruit juice, 1 oz club soda and 0.25 tsp agave syrup in a small chilled rocks glass with one large ice cube or a couple of smaller cubes.

Stir gently to combine, taste and adjust sweetness with a tiny pinch more agave if desired, then garnish with the half lime wedge and serve alongside or after the shot.
