1

Prepare glass (optional bitter rinse)

If you prefer a more pronounced bitter edge, pour the 0.25 tsp of the bitter amaro into a chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass, swirl to coat the interior, then discard any excess. If you prefer no rinse, skip this step.

2

Combine ingredients

Add the rye whiskey, dry vermouth, medium‑bitter amaro (Averna or Montenegro), maraschino liqueur, and 2 dashes of aromatic bitters into a mixing glass or cocktail shaker filled with plenty of fresh ice.

3

Stir

Stir the mixture briskly for 20–30 seconds (about 30–40 rotations) until well chilled and properly diluted — the mixing glass should become frosty and the liquid should be very cold.

4

Strain

Double strain (or fine strain if desired) the chilled cocktail into the prepared chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass. If you performed a bitter rinse, be mindful of any remaining puddle and avoid overpouring.

5

Garnish and serve

Express the orange twist over the drink to release its oils, run it around the rim, and drop it into the cocktail. Add the Luxardo or brandied cherry on a pick and rest it in the glass. Serve immediately.

6

Note: Adjust the maraschino and amaro quantities slightly to taste if you prefer sweeter or drier balance. Use a good quality rye (95–110 proof range recommended) for a robust backbone.
