Method
Toast
- 1
Preheat and prepare
If using a toaster oven or oven, preheat to 375°F (190°C). If using a toaster, set to medium-high. Arrange a wire rack or tray if using oven.
- 2
Butter the bread
Lightly spread about 1/2 tablespoon of softened butter (or brush 1/2 tablespoon olive oil) on each side of the 4 bread slices. This helps achieve a golden crispy surface and prevents sogginess from jam.
- 3
Toast until golden
Toast the buttered slices in a toaster on medium-high (2–3 cycles depending on your toaster) until golden and crisp. If using an oven, place slices on a baking sheet and toast for 6–9 minutes, flipping once halfway, until both sides are golden and edges crisp.
- 4
Optional seasoning
If desired, while hot, sprinkle a small pinch (~1/16 tsp) of coarse sea salt over each slice to enhance flavor contrast.
Jam & Spread
- 5
Prepare spreads
Spoon the jam into a small bowl and stir if separated. If using cream cheese, stir it until smooth and slightly loosen with a teaspoon of water or milk if too firm.
- 6
Assemble
When toast is still warm but not piping hot, spread about 1/2 tablespoon (or to taste) of cream cheese on two of the slices (optional). Then evenly spoon and spread about 2 tablespoons (approx. 1/8 cup) of jam onto each slice of toast. For a lighter jam layer, use 1 tablespoon per slice.
- 7
Add fresh fruit & drizzle
Top jam with sliced banana or a few berries (about 2 tablespoons worth per slice) if using. Drizzle each assembled toast with about 1/4 teaspoon of honey for extra shine and sweetness, if desired.
Garnish & Serve
- 8
Finish
If using, tear mint leaves and scatter one leaf (or two small pieces) on each toast. For a subtle savory contrast, lightly grind a small pinch (~1/32–1/16 tsp) of black pepper over each slice.
- 9
Serve immediately while the toast is warm and crisp. Provide extra jam on the side if desired.
