Orange-Vanilla Syrup

Method

Orange-Vanilla Syrup

1

Combine ingredients

In a small saucepan combine 1 cup fresh orange juice, 1 cup granulated sugar, 1/4 cup water, and the orange zest. If using a vanilla bean, scrape the seeds into the pan and add the scraped pod as well. If using vanilla extract, wait to add it after heating.

2

Heat and dissolve

Place the saucepan over medium heat. Stir constantly until the sugar fully dissolves and the mixture comes just to a simmer (about 4–6 minutes). Do not boil vigorously — a gentle simmer extracts flavor without cooking off volatile aromas.

3

Simmer briefly

Lower the heat and let the mixture simmer gently for 3 minutes to concentrate flavors. If using a vanilla bean pod, keep it in while simmering.

4

Cool and finish

Remove the pan from heat. If you used vanilla extract instead of a bean, stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract now. Discard the vanilla pod and strain the syrup through a fine mesh sieve into a heatproof container to remove zest and any solids. Let the syrup cool to room temperature, then chill in the refrigerator. Yield: about 1 to 1 1/4 cups syrup.

Assembly & Serve

5

Prepare glass

Fill a tall glass with 1 cup of ice cubes.

6

Pour oat milk

Pour 1 cup chilled oat milk over the ice, leaving room at the top for soda. For a creamier mouthfeel, gently swirl the glass to slightly froth the oat milk.

7

Add syrup

Measure and drizzle 2.5 tablespoons (≈37 ml) of the chilled orange-vanilla syrup over the oat milk. Adjust sweetness to taste: use 2 tablespoons for less sweetness or up to 3 tablespoons for a sweeter drink.

8

Top with club soda

Slowly pour 1/2 cup chilled club soda down the side of the glass to create a layered, effervescent top. This should produce a gentle fizz without excessive foaming.

9

Garnish and finish

Optionally sprinkle 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla bean scrapings on top for aroma. Garnish with an orange wheel or twist on the rim. Serve immediately with a straw or stirring stick so the drink can be mixed to taste.
