Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Prepare glass

Chill an old-fashioned glass by filling it with ice and setting aside while you build the cocktail. This keeps the drink cold without diluting it immediately.

  2. 2

    Build and stir

Discard the ice from the chilled glass. In a mixing glass add 2 oz Angel's Envy bourbon, 2 dashes fresh orange bitters, 1 dash Angostura bitters, and 0.25 oz simple syrup. Add plenty of ice (enough to come near the top of the mixing glass). Stir gently and steadily for 20–30 seconds until the exterior of the mixing glass becomes cold and slightly frosted and the cocktail is well chilled and diluted (roughly 15–25% dilution depending on ice).

  3. 3

    Strain

Using a Hawthorne or julep strainer, strain the cocktail into the chilled old-fashioned glass over one or two large fresh ice cubes.

  4. 4

    Express and garnish

Take an orange peel and hold it with the outer skin facing down just above the drink. Give the peel a firm twist to express the oils over the surface, then rub the peel around the glass rim and drop it into the drink as a garnish.

  5. 5

Serve immediately and enjoy. The finish highlights the port-cask finished notes of Angel's Envy while the bitters and light syrup provide balance and a slightly spiced orange character.
