Method
Cocktail
- 1
Chill glass
Place a rocks glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice and cold water while you build the cocktail, then discard the ice water before serving.
- 2
Measure and add spirits
Add 2 oz Amaro, 1 oz sweet vermouth, 0.5 oz dry vermouth, and 0.25 oz orange liqueur into a mixing glass or shaker (no shaking required).
- 3
Add bitters and optional syrup
Add 2 dashes of orange bitters, 1 dash of Angostura bitters, and 0.25 oz simple syrup if you prefer a slightly smoother, less bitter finish.
- 4
- 5
Strain
Discard the ice from the chilled rocks glass and place a single large ice cube in it. Double-strain or use a julep/ Hawthorne strainer to pour the cocktail into the prepared glass, leaving fine ice shards behind.
- 6
Express and garnish
Take an orange peel and hold it over the glass, skin side down. Give it a firm twist to express the oils over the surface of the cocktail, then rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the drink as a garnish.
- 7
Serve
Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the bitter-sweet herbal complexity; adjust future pours with a bit more simple syrup if you prefer less bitterness.
