Beverage

1

Prepare espresso

Pull two shots of espresso (about 60 ml total). Use freshly ground coffee, tamp evenly, and extract for roughly 25–30 seconds to obtain a rich, balanced espresso.

2

Heat water

Heat filtered water to just off boiling, about 90–96°C (195–205°F). Measure approximately 6 ounces (180 ml) for a standard americano. For a stronger americano, reduce hot water to 4–5 oz.

3

Assemble hot Americano

Pour the hot water into a warmed cup first (this preserves crema and temperature), then slowly pour the espresso over the hot water. Stir gently once to combine. Taste and adjust strength by adding up to 1 ounce more hot water if desired.

4

Assemble iced Americano (optional)

Fill a tall glass with 4–6 ice cubes. Pour the freshly pulled espresso over the ice, then add 6 oz (180 ml) of cold or room-temperature water. Stir gently to combine; the ice will chill and slightly dilute the drink.

Optional additions

5

Sweeten or lighten: Add sugar or simple syrup to taste (start with 1 tsp). If using granulated sugar, dissolve it into the hot water before adding espresso. For milk or cream, add 1 tablespoon and stir; adjust to preference.

6

Serve immediately: Serve hot in a pre-warmed cup or iced in a chilled glass. Offer spoon and napkin. Leftover espresso is best used within 30 minutes for optimal flavor.
