Method

Prepare Bread & Spread

  1. 1

    Lightly butter bread

Spread 1 tsp butter evenly on one side of each bread slice. The buttered sides will face outward if grilling; if serving cold, spread on the inside faces to help prevent sogginess.

Assemble Protein & Cheese

  1. 2

    Select protein and cheese

Choose one protein (turkey, ham, or chicken) and one cheese (American or mild cheddar). Place the protein evenly on top of the unbuttered side of one bread slice so it covers most of the surface.

  2. 3

Lay one slice of chosen cheese over the meat. If using cold condiments, spread mayonnaise or honey mustard thinly on the unbuttered side of the other bread slice (opposite the meat). Add optional cucumber or tomato slice on top of the cheese if desired.

Finish & Cook or Serve

  1. 4

    Close and cut

Place the second slice of bread, buttered side out (or with condiment inside if cold), on top of the fillings to close the sandwich. Press gently to compact.

  2. 5

    Optional warm version

If you want the Julian warm or slightly toasted, heat a nonstick skillet over low-medium heat. Place sandwich in skillet and cook 1.5–2 minutes per side until golden and the cheese begins to melt. Flip carefully with a spatula. Remove and let rest 30 seconds before cutting.

  3. 6

Cut the sandwich in half or into child-friendly shapes (triangles or fun shapes with a cookie cutter) and serve immediately with 4 carrot sticks or apple slices on the side.
