Cocktail Base

Method

Prep

  1. 1

    Rim (optional)

If you want a rimmed glass, rub the glass edge with a cut orange half, then dip the rim into a small plate with coarse salt or sugar. Set aside.

  2. 2

Chill a highball or Collins glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill with ice to cool while you mix the cocktail base.

Mixing the Cocktail Base

  1. 3

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice (about 3/4 full).

  2. 4

Add the vodka (1.5 oz), orange liqueur (0.5 oz), fresh orange juice (2 oz), fresh lime juice (0.25 oz), and simple syrup (0.25 oz) to the shaker.

  3. 5

Add 2 dashes of orange bitters if using. Secure the shaker lid and shake vigorously for 10–12 seconds until the shaker is cold to the touch and the mixture is well chilled and slightly frothy.

Assemble & Finish

  1. 6

Discard the ice from the chilled glass (if you used it to chill). Fill the glass with fresh ice (large cube or crushed, about 1 cup).

  2. 7

Strain the shaken cocktail base into the prepared glass over the ice.

  3. 8

Top gently with 4 oz of chilled seltzer. Stir once or twice gently with a bar spoon to combine without flattening the seltzer.

  4. 9

Garnish with an orange wheel or a long orange twist on the rim.

  5. 10

Serve immediately with a straw if desired.
