Method
Preparing and toasting
Preheat and choose method
Decide whether you will use a toaster, oven/toaster oven, or skillet. For quick even toasting use a pop-up toaster (2-slice or 4-slice). For croissants or biscuits that need warming and gentle browning use a toaster oven or skillet.
Slice if needed
If using a bagel, split it horizontally with a serrated knife. For biscuits, slice horizontally if you plan to butter the inside. For croissants, you can slice in half if you’ll add filling, or toast whole for crisp exterior.
Toaster method (bagel, everything bagel)
Place each bagel half cut-side facing the heating element in the toaster. For bagels, use a bagel setting if available (shorter, higher-heat cycle that toasts cut side more). Toast 1–3 cycles depending on desired doneness — typically 1–2 minutes for light, 2–3 minutes for medium-dark. Remove carefully with tongs if hot.
Toaster oven / oven method (croissant, biscuit, whole bagel)
Preheat toaster oven or conventional oven to 350°F (175°C). Place biscuits or croissants on a baking tray lined with parchment. Heat for 5–7 minutes for croissants (to warm, crisp exterior) or 6–8 minutes for pre-baked biscuits until warmed through and slightly golden. For a whole bagel, place cut-side up and toast 4–6 minutes until edges are crisp. Watch closely to avoid burning.
Skillet method (croissant or biscuit)
Heat a nonstick or cast-iron skillet over medium-low heat. Add 1 tsp olive oil or a small pat of butter and swirl. Place croissant halves or biscuit halves cut-side down and press gently with a spatula. Toast 1–3 minutes until golden and warmed through, then flip briefly (30–60 seconds) if you want both sides slightly crisp.
Finishing and serving
Remove the toasted item carefully and place on a plate. If using butter, spread while warm so it melts easily (approximately 1 tablespoon per piece, or to taste).
If using cream cheese, spread about 1–2 tablespoons on each bagel half while warm. For jam or honey, add 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon to taste. For croissants, a light smear of butter, jam, or a drizzle of honey complements the buttery layers.
Season with salt and pepper if using butter or olive oil. Serve immediately while warm and crisp. Store any leftovers in an airtight container once cooled; reheat in oven or toaster oven to restore crispness.
