Oatmeal Base

Method

Oatmeal Base

1

Measure and combine

In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats, 2 cups water, 1/2 cup whole milk, and 1/4 tsp salt. Stir briefly to combine.

2

Bring to a simmer

Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking, about 3–4 minutes.

3

Cook until creamy

Reduce heat to medium-low and continue to cook, stirring every 30 seconds, until oats are tender and the mixture is thick and creamy, about 6–8 minutes. If the oatmeal becomes too thick, stir in 1–2 tbsp additional water or milk to reach desired consistency.

Toppings & Sweeteners

4

Add raisins and finish

Stir in 1/4 cup raisins and 1 tsp unsalted butter into the cooked oats. Continue to heat for 1–2 minutes until raisins soften and butter melts through.

5

Sweeten and spice

Remove saucepan from heat and stir in 2 tbsp packed brown sugar and 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon. Taste and add 1 tsp maple syrup if you prefer additional sweetness.

6

Serve

Ladle oatmeal into a bowl. If desired, pour 1–2 tbsp milk over the top for a creamier mouthfeel. Optionally sprinkle an extra pinch of cinnamon or an additional small spoonful of brown sugar. Serve immediately while hot.
