Dough & Frying
Prepare work area
Line a baking sheet with paper towels or a wire rack set over a rimmed sheet to drain the fried biscuits. Place 1 tablespoon of flour on a small plate for light dusting.
Portion the biscuits
Open the can of refrigerated biscuit dough and separate into 8 biscuits. Using your hands, gently roll each biscuit into a smooth ball about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inches in diameter, tucking seams underneath to avoid splitting while frying. Lightly dust each ball with a little of the reserved flour to prevent sticking.
Heat the oil
Pour oil into a heavy-bottomed skillet or Dutch oven to a depth of about 1 inch (should be roughly 3/4 to 1 cup depending on your pan). Heat over medium-high until oil reaches 350°F (175°C) on a deep-fry thermometer. If you don't have a thermometer, test by dipping the handle of a wooden spoon — steady bubbling indicates proper temperature.
Fry the biscuit balls
Carefully lower 3–4 biscuit balls into the hot oil, leaving space so they do not touch. Fry, turning every 30–45 seconds with a slotted spoon, until golden brown and puffed on all sides, about 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 minutes total per batch. Adjust heat as necessary to keep the oil near 325–350°F so they cook through without burning.
Drain
Using a slotted spoon, transfer fried biscuits to the prepared paper towel-lined tray or wire rack to drain for 1–2 minutes.
Repeat
Continue frying remaining biscuits in batches, allowing oil to return to temperature between batches. Wipe off any excess flour on biscuit balls before frying if necessary.
Toss in powdered sugar
Place the warm drained biscuits in a large shallow bowl or paper bag with the powdered sugar. Gently toss to coat evenly so each biscuit is lightly dusted. Alternatively, dust with a sifter for a more delicate finish.
Dipping Sauce
Prepare apple butter dip
Spoon apple butter into a small bowl. If you prefer a smoother, slightly thinner dipping consistency, whisk in 1–2 teaspoons of heavy cream or half-and-half until well combined. Stir in ground cinnamon to taste (about 1 teaspoon) and adjust sweetness or spice to preference.
Warm (optional)
For a warm dipping sauce, microwave the apple butter mixture in 15-second intervals, stirring between, until warm but not boiling (about 20–40 seconds), or warm gently in a small saucepan over low heat for 1–2 minutes.
Finishing & Serving
Plate
Arrange the powdered-sugar-coated biscuit donuts on a serving platter. Place the apple butter dip in one or two small bowls for sharing.
Optional garnish & seasoning
If desired, sprinkle a pinch (about 1/2 teaspoon) of kosher salt lightly over a few biscuits to accentuate flavors and scatter chopped parsley for a color contrast. Serve immediately while biscuits are warm and tender.
Storage
Leftover fried biscuits are best eaten within a few hours. Store cooled biscuits in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 day; reheat in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 6–8 minutes to regain crispness. Store apple butter in the refrigerator separately for up to 2 weeks.
