Check the bottle for proper storage and any sediment. Patz & Hall Dutton Ranch Chardonnay is a filtered, medium-bodied wine; a quick visual check is sufficient.

Inspect bottle

Place the bottle in the refrigerator for 2 hours prior to serving or in an ice bucket filled with ice and water for 20–30 minutes. Aim for a serving temperature of 50–55°F (10–13°C) to highlight citrus, pear and apple notes while preserving toast and oak nuances.

Chill

Once chilled, wipe the bottle neck with a clean cloth. Use a corkscrew to gently remove the cork. If the wine has a screw cap, unscrew and discard the cap.

Open

For 10–15 minutes of gentle aeration, pour the wine into a decanter or swirl in the bottle. This can soften oak-derived toastiness and let citrus and orchard fruit aromas open up.

Decant (optional)

Hold the glass by the stem and pour about 5–6 ounces (150–180 ml) per serving, filling to the widest part of the bowl to allow aromas to concentrate.

Pour

Wash and thinly slice the pear and red apple. If desired, toss slices lightly with a few drops of lemon to prevent browning. Arrange 3–4 slices per person on a small plate.

Prepare fruit

Using a vegetable peeler or paring knife, cut a thin strip of lemon peel and twist over the glass to express oils, then optionally drop it into the glass or serve on the side.

Prepare citrus twist

Lightly toast thin slices of baguette or crisp crackers until just golden. You may rub with a cut garlic clove for a faint savory note, but keep accompaniments subtle so they do not overpower the wine.

Prepare toast/crackers

Arrange fruit and toasts on a small board. Serve the poured Chardonnay alongside. Taste and note the wine’s citrus, pear and red apple flavors along with toasted oak and medium body. Re-chill bottle between pours if serving over an extended period.

Pair and serve

Use tulip-shaped white wine glasses or medium-sized Bordeaux-style glasses to concentrate aromas and allow the wine’s medium body to show. Ensure glasses are clean and at room temperature (not chilled).

Select glassware

If using an ice bucket, keep the bottle between pours. If refrigerated, return to fridge after 2–3 open hours or transfer to an insulated sleeve to maintain 50–55°F (10–13°C).
