Cocktail

1

Prepare honey syrup

If you don't have honey syrup ready, make a 2:1 honey-to-water syrup: warm 2 parts honey with 1 part hot water and stir until combined. Cool to room temperature before using (about 5–10 minutes).

2

Muddle basil

In a cocktail shaker, add 6 fresh basil leaves. Gently clap the leaves between your hands first to release aromatics, then add the honey syrup. Lightly muddle the basil and honey syrup together 6–8 times to release fragrance without shredding the leaves excessively (avoid over-muddling which can produce bitterness).

3

Combine ingredients

Add 2 oz Buffalo Trace bourbon, 1/2 oz fresh lemon juice, 1/2 oz fresh grapefruit juice, and (optional) 1 dash Angostura bitters into the shaker with the muddled basil and syrup.

4

Dry shake

Seal the shaker and dry shake (no ice) vigorously for 10 seconds to further integrate the basil aroma and honey syrup.

5

Shake with ice

Add plenty of ice to the shaker (about 1 cup). Shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the shaker becomes frosty and well chilled.

6

Double-strain

Double-strain the cocktail into a chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer to remove basil fragments and small ice chips.

Garnish & Finish

7

Express the grapefruit twist over the drink by holding it over the glass and pinching to release the oils, then rub the twist around the rim and drop it into the cocktail.

8

Place a fresh basil sprig gently on the surface or beside the glass for aroma. Serve immediately.
