Bucket and tools
Method
Prepare the bucket
- 1
Select and position bucket
Choose a clean large bucket or cooler that comfortably fits six cans with room for ice. Place it on a stable, level surface where guests can reach it.
- 2
Add ice
Pour about 6 lbs of cubed ice into the bucket. Spread it evenly to create a bed that will hold and chill the cans.
- 3
Add cold water and salt (optional)
Pour approximately 1 cup of cold water over the ice so that the ice surrounds can bodies (this improves contact and chilling speed). If you want faster chilling, stir in 1 tablespoon of salt and mix briefly — salt lowers freezing point and cools cans faster. This step is optional.
Place beers and chill
- 4
Arrange cans
Nestle all six cans upright into the ice so they are in good contact with ice and water. Spread them so they sit evenly and are accessible from the top.
- 5
Allow time to chill
Let the beers sit for about 20–30 minutes for already-cold beers to be perfectly chilled. If cans came at room temperature, allow 30–45 minutes. If you used salt and crushed ice, chilling time can be 12–15 minutes. Rotate cans once midway for even cooling.
Serve and maintain
- 6
Serve
Use tongs or a scoop to remove a can. If serving in glasses, open a can and pour gently at a 45° angle to reduce foam, then straighten as the glass fills. Offer lime wedges if desired for styles that pair well (e.g., light lager).
- 7
Keep chilled
Top up ice and a splash of cold water as needed to keep cans chilled during service. If ice melts, drain excess water from the bucket occasionally and add fresh ice to maintain temperature.
- 8
Clean up
When finished, discard melted ice and water appropriately, rinse the bucket, and recycle empty cans.
