Ingredients

Wine Bottle

Preparation

Chill Bottle

1. Place the HIRSCH Riesling Gaisberg bottle in the refrigerator for 2–3 hours before serving to reach an ideal temperature of about 8–10°C (46–50°F). If short on time, fill an ice bucket halfway with ice and cold water and submerge the bottle for 20–30 minutes until chilled.

Prepare Glassware & Tools

2. Select appropriate white wine or Riesling glasses (tulip-shaped). Ensure glasses are clean and free of detergent residue. Place 4 glasses on a clean tray or table near where you will serve.

3. Have a waiter’s corkscrew or wine opener ready within reach. If you prefer a slightly softer expression, have a decanter available to let the Riesling open for 10–20 minutes after opening.

4. Arrange light snacks if serving with the wine: thinly sliced mild cheeses, lightly buttered bread, or fresh apple slices complement the wine’s acidity and aromatics.

Opening & Pouring

5. Remove foil

Use the knife on the corkscrew to cut and remove the foil just below the lip of the bottle. Wipe the bottle lip with a clean cloth or napkin to remove any residue.

6. Insert corkscrew

Center the corkscrew on the cork and twist it in smoothly until only one turn of the worm remains visible. Use the lever to gently ease the cork out to avoid cork breakage.

7. Optional decant

If desired, pour the Riesling into a decanter and let stand for 10–20 minutes to allow aromas to open. This is optional; many quality Rieslings are enjoyed directly from the bottle.

8. Pouring

Hold the bottle at the base and pour an initial small taste (about 1–2 oz / 30–60 ml) into a glass for the host or sommelier to evaluate. Then pour about 5–6 oz (150–180 ml) per guest, filling the glass to the widest part to encourage aromatics. Avoid overfilling—stop when the glass is about one-third full.

Tasting & Serving

9. Encourage guests to first observe the wine’s clarity and color, then swirl gently to release aromas. Take a moment to smell the wine, noting floral, stone fruit, and mineral notes typical of a Gaisberg Riesling.

10. Take a small sip, letting the wine coat the palate to experience acidity, sweetness (if present), and texture. Serve with the prepared light snacks, pairing the wine’s acidity and fruit with mild cheeses and apples or lighter fish and poultry dishes if serving with a meal.

11. Throughout service, keep the bottle in an ice bucket to maintain the ideal temperature. If wine warms, return to the ice bucket for 5–10 minutes before pouring subsequent servings.

Storage After Opening

12. If there is leftover wine, reseal the bottle with the cork or a wine stopper and store upright in the refrigerator. Consume within 3–5 days for best quality, noting Riesling’s acidity helps preserve freshness longer than many reds.
