1. Prepare glass
Select a tulip, snifter, or rocks glass. If you prefer a slightly chilled experience, place the glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes beforehand or chill briefly with ice and discard the ice before pouring.
2. Add cognac
Measure 2 oz Hennessy X.O and pour it gently into the prepared glass. This amount gives a generous, sipping portion that showcases the spirit's aromas and complexity.
3. Optional water or ice
If desired, add one large ice cube or sphere to slightly chill and open the aromas without diluting too quickly. Alternatively, add about 0.25 oz (a few drops to 1/4 oz) of still water to release additional aromatics and tame higher alcohol heat. Taste after adding and adjust to preference.
4. Optional garnish
Express an orange peel over the glass to release essential oils, then either rim the glass with the peel and drop it in or discard it. For a touch of sweetness, add one Luxardo or brandied cherry to the glass.
5. Sit back and sip slowly. Hold the glass by the stem or base to avoid warming the cognac with your hand. Take small sips, allowing the liquid to coat the palate to appreciate the layered flavors of spice, dried fruit, chocolate, and oak typical of Hennessy X.O.
