Coffee Base

Chocolate & Sweetener

Method

Prepare Coffee Base

1

Brew

Brew 1 cup of very strong coffee OR prepare two shots (about 0.25 cup) of espresso. If using espresso, you can dilute with 0.25 cup hot water to reach roughly 1 cup total volume. Keep coffee hot.

Make Chocolate Concentrate

2

In a small heatproof bowl, combine 1.5 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder and 1.5 tablespoons granulated sugar. Add 2 tablespoons hot water and whisk vigorously until the mixture becomes a smooth, glossy paste with no lumps. This blooms the cocoa and dissolves the sugar.

Combine Coffee and Chocolate

3

Pour the hot brewed coffee (or espresso + hot water) into a large mug or a heatproof pitcher. Add the chocolate paste to the hot coffee and whisk until fully incorporated and smooth. Taste and adjust sweetness if desired (add up to 1 additional teaspoon sugar).

Prepare Milk & Foam

4

In a small saucepan, combine 1/2 cup whole milk, 2 tablespoons heavy cream (optional for richness), 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Warm over medium-low heat until steaming but not boiling (about 2–3 minutes).

5

Froth the warmed milk using one of these methods: a handheld milk frother (froth 20–30 seconds), a French press (pump vigorously 15–20 times), or whisk vigorously for 30–45 seconds. Aim for a velvety microfoam.

Assemble & Garnish

6

Pour the frothed milk over the chocolate-coffee mixture, holding back foam with a spoon, then spoon the foam on top. If making an iced mocha jolt, fill a glass with 1 cup ice, combine chocolate paste with 1/2 cup strong coffee, pour over ice, then top with cold milk and stir.

7

Top with 2 tablespoons whipped cream if desired and sprinkle 1/2 teaspoon chocolate shavings or a dusting of cocoa powder. Serve immediately.
