Method
Cocktail
- 1
Prep
Chill an old-fashioned glass by filling it with ice and setting it aside. If you don't have cold espresso ready, brew a shot and cool it quickly by pouring over ice in a small cup, then discard the ice so the espresso is cold but not diluted.
- 2
Mix
Discard the chilling ice from the glass. In a mixing glass add 1.75 oz Bruichladdich Port Charlotte 10 Year, 0.75 oz Varnelli Caffè Moka, 0.5 oz Giffard Vanille de Madagascar, 0.5 oz cold espresso, 0.25 oz simple syrup and 2 dashes chocolate bitters.
- 3
Stir
Add plenty of ice to the mixing glass and stir gently for 20–30 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted (mixture should be near-clear and cold to the touch).
- 4
Serve
Strain the cocktail over a single large ice cube (or fresh medium cubes) into the chilled old-fashioned glass.
- 5
Garnish
Express the oils of an orange twist over the surface, run the twist around the glass rim, and drop it into the drink.
- 6
Enjoy: The Midtown Express balances the peaty smokiness of Port Charlotte with round coffee and warm vanilla — sip slowly.
Ice
- 7
Use fresh large ice cube(s) when serving to minimize dilution and keep the drink cold while preserving its concentrated flavors.
