Coffee Preparation

Method

Grind and Measure

  1. 1

    Weigh or measure beans

Measure about 0.33 cups (roughly 20 grams / 0.7 oz) of whole coffee beans for a 12 fl oz (about 350 ml) cup. This yields a coffee-to-water ratio of roughly 1:17 (brew strength medium). Adjust to taste.

  2. 2

    Grind beans

Grind the measured beans to the grind size appropriate for your brewing method: medium-coarse for pour-over, medium for drip, fine for espresso. Aim for a consistent grind. If using preground coffee, measure 2 tablespoons and skip grinding.

Heat Water

  1. 3

Pour 12 fl oz of filtered water into a kettle and heat to about 200°F (93°C). If you don’t have a thermometer, bring to a boil and let sit 30 seconds.

Brewing

  1. 4

    Prepare brewer

Set up your chosen brewing device (drip coffee maker, pour-over cone with paper filter, French press, or AeroPress). Rinse paper filter with hot water if using, then discard rinse water to preheat the brewer.

  2. 5

    Bloom (for pour-over or drip)

Place the ground coffee in the filter or brewer. Pour a small amount of hot water (about 1.5–2 fl oz) evenly over the grounds to saturate them and let sit 30–45 seconds to degas (bloom).

  3. 6

    Complete the brew

Slowly pour the remaining hot water over the grounds in a circular motion (for pour-over) until you reach 12 fl oz total. For drip machines, start the machine and let it run. For French press, pour all water, stir gently, place lid and steep 4 minutes, then press. For AeroPress, follow device-specific timing (about 1–2 minutes total).

  4. 7

Once brewing is complete, remove the filter or pour the coffee into a mug. Serve immediately for best flavor.

Finishing and Serving

  1. 8

    Customize

Stir in optional ingredients to taste: 1–2 teaspoons sugar or sweetener, 1–2 tablespoons milk or dairy-free milk, or 1 teaspoon heavy cream or flavored syrup. Adjust amounts based on preference.

  2. 9

Taste and adjust. If coffee is too weak, increase coffee quantity or use a finer grind next time. If too strong, use more water or coarser grind.

  3. 10

Enjoy your cup of freshly brewed coffee. Clean equipment after use.
