Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place an Old Fashioned glass (rocks glass) in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice and cold water to chill while you prepare the cocktail.

  2. 2

    Combine spirits

Add 1 oz gin, 1 oz sweet red vermouth, and 1 oz Campari to a mixing glass or a cocktail shaker filled about halfway with ice (use approximately 1 cup of ice).

  3. 3

    Stir

Stir the mixture briskly for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 rotations) until well chilled and slightly diluted. If you prefer a slightly colder, more aerated drink, stir a little longer; avoid shaking to maintain clarity and texture.

  4. 4

    Prepare glass

Discard the ice or water from the chilled Old Fashioned glass. Place a single large ice cube or sphere into the glass.

  5. 5

    Strain

Strain the stirred cocktail from the mixing glass into the prepared glass over the large ice cube using a julep or Hawthorne strainer.

  6. 6

    Garnish and finish

Express the oils from an orange peel over the surface by holding the peel skin-side down about 3–4 inches above the drink and giving it a firm snap to release the oils. Run the peel around the rim of the glass, then drop it into the drink as a garnish.

Optional adjustments

  1. 7

    Lengthen with soda

If you want a slightly longer, lighter Negroni (Aldo's Long), add 1 oz of soda water to the glass after straining and gently stir once to combine.

  2. 8

    Soften bitterness

If the cocktail is too bitter for your taste, stir in 1/4 tsp of simple syrup into the mixing glass before straining, or add it directly to the served drink and stir gently.

  3. 9

    Add bitters

For extra aromatic complexity, add 1 dash of Angostura bitters to the mixing glass with the spirits before stirring.
