Method

Cocktail

1

Chill glass

Place a coupe or rocks glass in the freezer for 5 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to chill it.

2

Combine ingredients

Add the Campari, sweet vermouth, and gin into a mixing glass or shaker.

3

Fill with ice

Fill the mixing glass with plenty of ice (enough to fill roughly 3/4 of the glass) to properly chill and dilute the drink.

4

Stir

Stir the mixture with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds (about 30–40 full turns) until well-chilled and slightly diluted. If you prefer a slightly stronger, less-diluted drink, stir 15–20 seconds.

5

Prepare glass

If you chilled your glass with ice water, discard the ice water now. If using a rocks glass, you may add a large ice cube. If using a coupe, leave the glass chilled and dry.

6

Strain

Using a strainer, double-strain (if you used crushed ice) or single-strain into the chilled coupe or over the large ice cube in the rocks glass.

7

Garnish

Express the orange peel over the surface of the drink by holding it skin-side down and giving it a firm twist to release oils, then rub the rim with the peel and drop it into the glass. Optionally add an orange slice or cocktail cherry on a pick.

Optional serving notes

8

Serve immediately. For a longer, lighter sipper, serve over a tall glass with more ice and top with a splash of soda water (about 1–2 oz).
