Preparation

Baklava Directions

1. Prepare the Nut Filling

In a bowl, combine the chopped walnuts, chopped almonds, granulated sugar, and ground cinnamon. Mix well and set aside.

2. Prepare the Filo and Butter

Melt the unsalted butter in a saucepan. Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with some of the melted butter. Layer 10 sheets of filo pastry in the dish, brushing each sheet with melted butter before adding the next.

3. Add Nut Filling

Spread half of the nut filling evenly over the layered filo. Layer another 5 sheets of filo, brushing each with melted butter, then add the remaining nut filling. Top with another 10 sheets of butter-brushed filo.

4. Cut the Baklava

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes. Pour any remaining melted butter over the top.

5. Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes, or until the baklava is golden brown and crisp.

6. Prepare the Honey Syrup

While the baklava is baking, combine the water, honey, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.

7. Soak the Baklava

Once the baklava is baked, remove it from the oven and pour the hot honey syrup evenly over the baklava. Allow to cool completely before serving.
