Equipment (ingredients listed because some recipes count them)
Method
Brew
Measure beans
Weigh 35 g (0.035 kg) of whole coffee beans. This yields roughly 2 standard 8-oz (240 ml) cups of brewed coffee. Adjust proportionally for more or less volume using a 1:15 coffee-to-water ratio (by weight).
Grind
Grind the beans to the grind size appropriate for your method: medium-coarse for French press, medium for drip/batch cone, fine for espresso. For a pour-over or drip method, aim for a consistency like coarse sand.
Heat water
Bring filtered water to a temperature of 90–96°C (195–205°F). If you don't have a thermometer, bring to a boil and let sit 30 seconds to reach the correct range.
Rinse filter (if using paper)
If using a paper filter, place it in the dripper and rinse with hot water to remove paper flavor and preheat the dripper. Discard rinse water.
Bloom (for pour-over/French press pre-infusion)
Place the ground coffee in the filter or press. Pour just enough hot water (about twice the weight of the grounds, ~70 g/ml water for 35 g grounds) to saturate the grounds evenly. Let sit 30–45 seconds to allow CO2 to escape and the grounds to bloom.
Continue pouring / steep
Slowly add the remaining water in a circular motion over the grounds if using pour-over, aiming to finish pouring by 2:30–3:00 minutes. For French press, pour the remaining water, stir gently, place the lid with the plunger pulled up, and steep for 4 minutes before plunging slowly.
Finish brew
Allow the brewed coffee to drain/settle. For pour-over/drip, let all water pass through the grounds. For French press, press the plunger down slowly and steadily to separate grounds from liquid. Transfer brewed coffee to a server or cups immediately to avoid over-extraction and bitterness.
Optional additions
Sweeten and season
Add sugar or sweetener (1 tsp or to taste) and a very small pinch of salt if desired; stir into the brewed coffee until dissolved.
Cleanup
Discard used grounds and rinse the brewing equipment. If you used a paper filter, compost it if possible. Wipe and dry equipment before storing.
