Method
Prepare equipment
Warm cup
Preheat a 240–300 ml (8–10 oz) cup or mug by rinsing it with hot water, then discard the rinse. This helps maintain extraction temperature and keeps the Americano hot longer.
Check equipment
Ensure your espresso machine is warmed up, the portafilter and group head are clean, and your grinder is set for a fine espresso grind.
Pull the espresso
Dose and tamp
Weigh 18 g of freshly ground espresso into a clean portafilter basket. Distribute evenly and tamp with consistent pressure to create a flat, level puck.
Brew
Lock the portafilter into the group head and start extraction. Aim for approximately 40 ml of espresso in 25–30 seconds (adjust grind or dose to dial in). Stop extraction when the target volume/time is reached.
Assemble the Americano
Add hot water first (traditional style)
Pour 120 ml of hot water into the warmed cup. This is the traditional method to preserve crema and reduce bitterness. Leave space for the espresso.
Pour espresso over water
Slowly pour the 40 ml espresso over the hot water. Pouring gently helps preserve some crema and integrates the espresso with the water for a balanced flavor.
Alternative order (if preferred)
If you prefer a slightly different mouthfeel and less crema disruption, pour the espresso into the cup first, then add hot water.
