Method

Prep & Build

1

Chill glassware and ingredients

Place a flute or coupe in the freezer for 10–15 minutes or fill with ice water while you prepare the other components. Ensure the champagne is well chilled (around 40°F / 4–5°C).

2

Lightly muddle basil (optional)

If using basil, place 1 basil leaf gently in the base of a mixing glass or small shaker and press once or twice with a muddler or the back of a spoon. You want to release aroma without tearing into bits. Discard the leaf if you prefer no herb bits in the drink; keep the aroma only by slapping a leaf between your hands before garnishing.

3

Combine modifiers

Add the elderflower liqueur, gin (if using), fresh lemon juice, and simple syrup into the mixing glass. Add 3–4 ice cubes and stir gently for about 10 seconds to slightly chill and integrate the flavors (do not over-dilute).

4

Strain into glass

Discard ice from the chilled flute or coupe. Fine-strain the stirred mixture into the glass to remove any small basil fragments or ice shards.

5

Top with Champagne

Slowly top the glass with chilled Champagne poured down the side to preserve bubbles, about 6 oz. Pour gently to avoid overflow; fill to desired level.

Finish & Garnish

6

Add berries (optional)

If using fresh berries, gently drop 1–2 raspberries or a single blackberry into the bottom of the glass before or after topping with Champagne. They will add color and a subtle fruit note.

7

Garnish with basil and lemon

Express the lemon twist over the surface of the drink to release oils, then run it around the rim and place it on the rim or float it on top. Add the remaining basil leaf gently on the surface or tuck it behind the twist for aroma.

8

Serve

Present immediately while the Champagne is lively. Provide a small stirrer if desired, but advise sipping without mixing to enjoy the layered aromatics.
