Cocktail

1

Prepare mixing glass and ice

Fill a mixing glass with large ice cubes to chill it and ensure proper dilution while you assemble the cocktail.

2

Measure and combine

Add 2 oz rye whiskey and 1 oz Averna to the chilled mixing glass. Add 2 dashes Angostura bitters and 1 dash orange bitters if using.

3

Stir

Stir the mixture with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 revolutions) until the outside of the glass feels very cold and the liquid is properly diluted and slightly viscous.

4

Prepare serving glass (optional rinse)

If using a smoky rinse, pour 0.25 tsp peated whisky into a chilled coupe or rocks glass, swirl to coat the interior, then discard any excess or leave a thin coating for aroma.

5

Strain and garnish

Double-strain the stirred cocktail into the chilled coupe or a rocks glass over one large ice cube (or neat in a coupe). Garnish with a single Luxardo or brandied cherry. Express a twist of orange peel over the drink if you like, then discard or rim the glass with the peel.

6

Serve

Serve immediately. Sip and enjoy the bitter-sweet, herbal-laced variation on a classic Manhattan.
