Method
Prepare Bread
Preheat and cut
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Using a sharp serrated knife, slice the baguette in half lengthwise. If you prefer pull-apart pieces, instead cut the loaf crosswise into 1 to 1½-inch thick slices without cutting all the way through (keep the base intact). Place cut sides up on a baking sheet lined with parchment.
Make Garlic-Parmesan Butter
In a medium bowl, combine the softened unsalted butter and softened cream cheese. Mix with a fork or spatula until smooth and homogenous.
Add the minced garlic, freshly grated Parmesan, chopped parsley, lemon zest (if using), salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Stir until evenly incorporated. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
If the mixture is very soft, chill for 10 minutes to firm slightly so it spreads cleanly on the bread.
Assemble
Bake and Finish
Bake in the preheated 375°F (190°C) oven for 10–14 minutes, until the butter is bubbly and the cheese (if added) is melted.
For a golden-brown, slightly crisp top, switch the oven to broil on high for 1–2 minutes while watching very carefully to avoid burning. Remove when the top is lightly browned and bubbling.
Serve
Slice into serving pieces (if not pre-sliced) and serve warm. Pair with salads, soups, or serve as an appetizer. Leftovers can be reheated in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 6–8 minutes to refresh.
