Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Whisk together until well mixed.

  2. 2

    Add Wet Ingredients

Add the melted butter and warm water into the dry ingredients. Mix until a soft dough forms.

  3. 3

    Knead the Dough

Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 2-3 minutes until smooth. Cover with a cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.

Frying Sopapillas

  1. 4

    Heat Oil

In a deep frying pan or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  2. 5

    Roll Out Dough

Divide the rested dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a thin circle about 1/8 inch thick.

  3. 6

    Fry the Sopapillas

Carefully place one or two rolled-out circles in the hot oil. Fry for about 1-2 minutes on each side, or until they puff up and turn golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.

Topping Preparation

  1. 7

    Make Butter Sauce

In a small saucepan, melt 4 tablespoons of butter over low heat. Remove from heat and set aside.

  2. 8

    Serve

Drizzle the fried sopapillas with the melted butter sauce, sprinkle with powdered sugar, and add chocolate syrup to taste. Serve warm with scoops of vanilla ice cream.
