Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Prepare Glass

Fill a highball or Collins glass with ice cubes until roughly three-quarters full.

  2. 2

    Add Tequila and Orange Juice

Measure and pour 2 oz blanco tequila over the ice, then pour 4 oz fresh orange juice directly into the glass. Do not stir after adding grenadine in the next step — you want the layered sunrise effect.

  3. 3

    Add Grenadine

Slowly pour 0.5 oz grenadine down the inside back of the glass or over the back of a bar spoon so it sinks to the bottom and gradually rises to create the 'sunrise' gradient. Allow a moment for the syrup to settle.

  4. 4

    Garnish and Serve

Garnish with an orange wheel and a maraschino cherry on a pick or perched on the rim. Present without stirring so the layered color remains; provide a straw or bar spoon so the drinker can gently mix before drinking if desired.

Optional/Tools

  1. 5

If you prefer a slightly sweeter or larger cocktail, increase grenadine to 0.75 oz or orange juice to 5 oz and adjust tequila proportionally. For a smoother pour when layering, pour grenadine slowly over the back of a bar spoon.
