Classic Margarita

Method

Classic Margarita

  1. 1

    Prepare glass

Run a lime wedge around the outside rim of 4 old-fashioned or coupe glasses. Pour coarse salt onto a small plate, then press each glass rim into the salt to coat. Set glasses aside.

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

In a cocktail shaker, add 6 oz blanco tequila, 3 oz fresh lime juice, 1.5 oz orange liqueur, and 0.5 oz simple syrup (or agave syrup).

  3. 3

    Add ice and shake

Add about 2 cups of ice to the shaker. Seal and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds, until the shaker is very cold and slightly frosted.

  4. 4

    Strain and serve

Fill the prepared glasses with fresh ice (if serving on the rocks) or leave them empty for straight-up. Double-strain the cocktail into the glasses using the shaker strainer and a fine mesh strainer to catch any pulp or shards of ice.

  5. 5

    Garnish

Garnish each glass with a lime wheel or wedge on the rim. Serve immediately.

Optional Variations & Garnishes

  1. 6

    Frozen fruit margarita

If using fresh fruit purée (about 4 tbsp), add the purée to a blender with the classic margarita ingredients and 1 to 1 1/2 cups of ice. Blend until smooth and pour into salt-rimmed glasses. Adjust sweetness with a little extra simple syrup if needed.

  2. 7

    Spicy or flavored rim

For a chili-lime rim, mix coarse salt with a pinch of chili powder and lime zest. For a sweeter rim, use coarse sugar. Rim glasses as described in 'Prepare glass.'

  3. 8

    Margarita spritz

For a lighter drink, reduce tequila to 1 oz per serving and after shaking, top each glass with about 0.5 oz club soda or sparkling water. Stir gently once and garnish.
