Method

Soup Preparation

  1. 1

    Sauté the Onions

In a large pot, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced yellow onions and cook, stirring frequently, for about 25-30 minutes until they are caramelized and golden brown.

  2. 2

    Add Garlic

After the onions are caramelized, add minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

  3. 3

    Deglaze with Wine

Pour in the dry white wine, scraping the bottom of the pot to release any browned bits. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes until reduced by half.

  4. 4

    Add Broth and Seasonings

Add the beef broth, thyme, bay leaf, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer and let it cook for 30-40 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

Serving

  1. 5

    Prepare the Baguette

While the soup is simmering, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Slice the baguette into 1-inch thick pieces and arrange them on a baking sheet.

  2. 6

    Bake the Baguette

Toast the baguette slices in the preheated oven for about 5-7 minutes until they are golden and crispy.

  3. 7

    Serve the Soup

Remove the bay leaf from the soup. Ladle the hot soup into oven-safe bowls, top each with 1-2 slices of toasted baguette, and sprinkle generously with Gruyère and Parmesan cheese.

  4. 8

    Broil the Cheese

Place the bowls on a baking sheet and broil in the oven for 3-5 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown. Keep a close eye to prevent burning.

  5. 9

    Enjoy!

Carefully remove the bowls from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your classic French onion soup!
