Method

Preparation

1

Muddle fruit and herb

In a mixing glass or cocktail shaker, add 4 fresh blackberries, 3 fresh sage leaves, and 0.5 oz fresh lime juice. Gently muddle about 8–10 times to release juices and aromas without pulverizing the sage into bits. Aim to bruise the sage for aroma but keep visible pieces minimal.

2

Add spirits and sweetener

To the muddled blackberry and sage, add 0.75 oz La Curandera, 0.75 oz Nocheluna Wheeleri Sotol, 0.5 oz Ilegal Joven, 0.5 oz Dme Benedictine, and 0.5 oz simple syrup (1:1).

3

Dry shake (optional)

If you want a slightly frothier texture and better integration of fruit, seal the shaker and shake vigorously without ice for 8–10 seconds to emulsify the fruit and egg-white-like texture from the herbs and berries (no egg used). This step is optional but recommended for a silkier mouthfeel.

4

Shake with ice

Add ice to the shaker, then shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the shaker is well chilled and slightly frosted.

5

Double strain

Double-strain the cocktail through a fine mesh strainer into a chilled rocks glass over a single large ice cube. Double straining removes blackberry seeds and sage bits for a clean presentation.

Garnish & Serve

6

Gently slap a fresh sage sprig between your palms to release its aroma, then place it on the large ice cube. Skewer one fresh blackberry on a small pick and rest it across the rim or float it on the ice. Optionally express a light twist of lime over the drink and discard.

7

Serve immediately, presenting the drink as a smoky, herbal, and slightly sweet sip reminiscent of a desert evening.
