Method

Burger

  1. 1

    Shape the patty

Gently form the 4 oz ground beef into a round patty about 3.5–4 inches in diameter and roughly 3/4 inch thick. Press a shallow dimple in the center with your thumb to help it cook evenly and stay flat.

  2. 2

    Season

Lightly season both sides of the patty with 1/4 tsp salt and 1/8 tsp black pepper.

  3. 3

    Cook the patty

Heat 1/2 tbsp oil in a nonstick skillet or cast-iron pan over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add the patty and cook for 3–3.5 minutes on the first side without moving. Flip and cook 2.5–3 minutes more for a medium-to-well cooked kid-friendly patty (adjust 30–60 seconds less for medium-rare if desired).

  4. 4

    Melt the cheese

About 30 seconds before the patty is done, lay the Cheddar slice over the patty. Cover the pan with a lid or tent with foil for 20–30 seconds to help the cheese melt.

Bun & Finish

  1. 5

    Toast the bun

While the burger finishes, spread 1/2 tbsp softened butter (or mayonnaise) on the cut sides of the bun. Place the bun, buttered-side down, in a separate skillet over medium heat or on a griddle and toast 45–60 seconds until lightly golden. Alternatively, toast under a broiler for 30–60 seconds—watch carefully.

  2. 6

    Assemble

Place the toasted bottom bun on a plate. Put the lettuce (about 1/2 cup loosely packed) on the bottom bun, add the hot cheeseburger patty, then top with 2 tomato slices. Add ketchup and/or mustard if desired (about 1 tsp ketchup and 1/2 tsp mustard). Finish with the top bun.

  3. 7

    Serve

Let the burger rest 1 minute (cheese will be hot), then cut in half if desired for a child-friendly portion. Serve warm.
