Main

Method

Prepare chocolate base

  1. 1

    Mix cocoa and sugar

In a small bowl or measuring cup, combine the unsweetened cocoa powder and granulated sugar. Add 2 tablespoons of the milk and stir into a smooth paste with no lumps. This helps the cocoa dissolve evenly.

  2. 2

Warm milk (for hot) or use cold (for cold)

For hot chocolate milk: pour the remaining milk into a small saucepan and warm over medium-low heat until hot but not boiling (steam rising and small bubbles at the edge), about 3–5 minutes. For iced chocolate milk: skip warming and use cold milk from the fridge.

  3. 3

    Combine

If using warm milk: remove the saucepan from heat and whisk in the cocoa-sugar paste until fully combined and smooth. If making cold/iced: whisk or shake the cocoa-sugar paste with the additional cold milk until smooth.

  4. 4

    Finish

Stir in the vanilla extract and a small pinch of salt to brighten flavors. Taste and add more sugar if you prefer sweeter chocolate milk.

Serve and garnish

  1. 5

Pour the chocolate milk into a mug for hot or into a tall glass filled with ice for iced. If desired, drizzle chocolate syrup inside the glass before pouring for extra chocolate flavor.

  2. 6

Top with whipped cream and mini marshmallows if using. Serve immediately.
