Mojito Base (per 1 cocktail)

Method

Mojito Base (per 1 cocktail)

  1. 1

    Prepare glass and mint

Place 10 fresh mint leaves into a sturdy highball glass. Add 0.75 oz fresh lime juice and 0.75 oz simple syrup (or 1/2 tsp sugar). Using a muddler, gently press and twist the mint leaves 6–8 times to release oils — do not shred them. The goal is aromatic oil and lime integration, not pulverized mint.

  2. 2

    Add rum and ice

Pour 2 oz white rum into the glass. Fill the glass about three-quarters with crushed ice (about 1 cup).

  3. 3

    Top with soda and stir

Top the cocktail with about 2 oz club soda. Use a long bar spoon to gently lift and stir the mixture 6–8 times from bottom to top to mix the muddled mint and lime with the rum and soda without bruising the leaves further.

  4. 4

    Garnish and finish

Add a lime wedge or wheel on the rim and a fresh mint sprig. If desired, add 1 dash of Angostura bitters on top for aroma. Serve immediately with a straw, brushing the mint sprig lightly between your palms first to release scent.

Bar Tools & Optional Add-ins

  1. 5

If you don't have simple syrup: after adding lime and mint, add 1/2 tsp granulated sugar and muddle until sugar dissolves into the lime juice. If you prefer a stiffer, colder drink or are batching multiple cocktails, build in a shaker: combine muddled mint, lime juice, simple syrup and rum with 4 ice cubes, shake briefly (6–8 seconds), then strain into a glass filled with crushed ice and top with club soda.
