- 1
Pre-chill glass (optional)
Place the rocks glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice and let sit while preparing to lightly chill the glass. Discard chilling ice before building if used.
- 2
Build the drink
Add 0.25 oz (1/4 oz) simple syrup to a mixing glass or directly into a rocks glass. Add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters on top of the syrup.
- 3
Add bourbon and stir
Pour 2 oz Maker's Mark bourbon into the glass. If using a mixing glass, add ice (enough to fill the mixing glass) and stir with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds until chilled and slightly diluted (about 15–20% dilution). If building in the serving glass, add one large ice cube or several large chunks and gently stir for 10–15 seconds to combine and chill.

Serve and garnish
Strain from mixing glass into a rocks glass over a large ice cube if you used a mixing glass. Express an orange peel over the drink by holding it with the outer (colored) side facing down over the glass and giving it a quick twist to spray oils across the surface. Rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the glass. Optionally add one maraschino cherry on a pick.

Final notes
Taste and adjust: if you prefer it slightly sweeter, add an additional 1/8 oz simple syrup next time. For a drier, more aromatic finish, add an extra dash of bitters.
