Martini

Method

Prepare glass

  1. 1

Place the martini glass in the freezer for at least 10 minutes or fill with ice water to chill while you prepare the cocktail.

Mixing the martini

  1. 2

    Measure

Measure 3 oz gin and 0.5 oz dry vermouth.

  2. 3

    Add ice

Fill the mixing glass or shaker with about 8 large ice cubes to properly chill and dilute the spirit.

  3. 4

    Stir (preferred) or shake

Pour the measured gin and vermouth over the ice. Using a bar spoon, stir gently but thoroughly for 20–30 seconds (about 30–40 full turns), until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted. If you prefer a shaken martini, secure the shaker and shake vigorously for about 10–15 seconds, then proceed to strain.

  4. 5

    Strain

Discard the chilling ice or water from the martini glass. Using a strainer, pour the chilled martini into the chilled martini glass, leaving the ice behind in the mixing vessel.

Garnish & finish

  1. 6

For an olive garnish: thread 1 green olive onto a cocktail pick and rest it on the rim or drop it into the glass. For a lemon twist: use a peeler or small knife to cut a 1-inch wide strip of peel, avoiding too much pith; twist it over the drink to express oils, rub the rim with the peel if desired, then drop it in or place on the rim.

  2. 7

    Serve immediately while cold.
