Method
Main
Bring water to a boil
Place 4 cups of water in a medium saucepan large enough to hold the edamame. Add 1 tablespoon of coarse sea salt and bring the water to a rolling boil over high heat.
Cook the edamame
Add 1 cup frozen edamame in pods straight from the freezer to the boiling water. Stir once to separate the pods and return to a boil. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes until the pods are bright green and tender when sampled (3 minutes for firmer, 5 minutes for softer).
Finishing & Serving
Season
While the pods are still hot, drizzle 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil over them and sprinkle about 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper and 1 teaspoon flaky salt (or to taste). If using, add 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes for heat.
Toss and serve
Toss or shake the pods gently so the oil and seasonings coat them evenly. Serve the edamame hot or warm with lemon or lime wedges on the side for each diner to squeeze over their portion if desired.
How to eat
To eat, hold a pod at both ends, squeeze or bite the edge to pop the beans into your mouth, discarding the pod. Do not eat the pods.
