Cocktail

1

Prepare glass

Chill an old-fashioned glass by filling it with ice and setting aside while you build the cocktail.

2

Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass or cocktail shaker filled with ice, add 1.5 oz rye whiskey, 0.5 oz bourbon, 0.5 oz Averna, 0.5 oz Meletti Caffè (or other coffee amaro), 0.25 oz demerara or simple syrup, 2 dashes orange bitters, and 1 dash Angostura bitters.

3

Stir

Stir the mixture briskly with a bar spoon for about 30–40 seconds (or until well chilled and properly diluted, about 20–25 full rotations). Aim for a silky, slightly viscous texture from the amari and spirits.

4

Prepare glass (finish)

Dump the ice from the chilled old-fashioned glass and place one large clear ice cube into it.

5

Strain and garnish

Double-strain or fine-strain the cocktail from the mixing glass into the old-fashioned glass over the large ice cube. Express the oils from an orange peel over the drink by holding the peel skin-side down about 2–3 inches above the surface and giving it a firm squeeze, then run the rim of the glass with the peel and drop it into the drink as garnish.

6

Serve

Serve immediately. Sip slowly to enjoy the interplay of spicy rye, sweet bourbon, and coffee-forward herbal bitterness from the Averna and Meletti.
