Method

Hot Toddy Base

1

Heat water

Bring 1 cup (240 ml) of water to just under a boil. Ideally heat to around 85–95°C (185–203°F) — steaming but not violently boiling.

2

Prepare cup

Warm a mug by pouring a little of the hot water in, swishing, then discarding that water. This keeps the drink hot longer.

3

Add 2 tablespoons of whiskey to the warmed mug.

4

Stir in 1 tablespoon of honey until dissolved.

5

Stir in 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice.

6

Pour the remaining hot water into the mug and stir to combine. Taste and adjust: add extra honey if you prefer sweeter, or another 1/2 tablespoon lemon for more brightness.

Garnish & Aromatics

7

Stud a thin lemon slice with 2 whole cloves. Float the clove-studded lemon slice on top of the drink.

8

Add 1 cinnamon stick as a stirrer and to infuse warm spice aroma. Let steep for 1–2 minutes before sipping.

9

Optional: If you prefer a stronger cinnamon aroma, briefly toast the cinnamon stick over a low flame (or in a dry skillet) for 5–8 seconds before adding.
