Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a coupe or martini glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail; discard ice water before straining.

  2. 2

    Build and mix

Add 2 oz añejo rum, 3 tsp dry/white vermouth, 1 tsp orange curaçao, 1 tsp grenadine, and 1 dash Angostura bitters into a cocktail shaker or mixing glass. Fill the shaker with ice (about 1 cup) until nearly full.

  3. 3

    Shake or stir

Traditionally the El Presidente is stirred, but shaking lightly will chill and slightly dilute faster. Stir the mixture briskly for 20–25 seconds (or shake for 8–10 seconds) until well chilled and slightly diluted.

  4. 4

    Strain

Double-strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe or martini glass using a Hawthorne or fine-mesh strainer to remove small ice shards.

  5. 5

    Garnish and serve

Express the oils of an orange twist over the drink then drop it in for garnish, or garnish with a maraschino cherry. Serve immediately.
