Cocktail

Optional rinse (for extra chocolate aroma)

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Prepare glass (optional rinse)

If using an optional chocolate rinse, pour 1 tsp of chocolate bitters or crème de cacao into the serving glass, swirl to coat the interior, then discard or keep a thin coating in the glass. This adds chocolate aroma without sweetening too much.

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass, add 1 oz gin, 1 oz Campari, 1 oz sweet vermouth, 1/2 oz chocolate liqueur, and 2 dashes orange bitters.

  3. 3

    Add ice and stir

Fill the mixing glass with about 6 large ice cubes. Stir gently and steadily for 20–30 seconds (about 15–20 full rotations) until the mixture is well-chilled, slightly diluted, and clear.

  4. 4

    Strain and serve

Place a single large ice cube or sphere into an old-fashioned (rocks) glass. Strain the stirred cocktail into the glass over the large ice cube.

Garnish & Finish

  1. 5

Express the oils from the orange peel over the surface of the cocktail by holding the peel with the outer skin facing down about 3–4 inches above the drink and giving it a quick fold or a short squeeze. Run the peel around the rim and drop it into the glass.

  2. 6

If using, grate or shave about 1 tsp of dark chocolate over the drink for a lightly bitter chocolate note and visual appeal. Serve immediately.
