Cocktail

Method

Garnish & Glass Prep

  1. 1

    Prepare glass

Chill a martini or coupe glass in the freezer for at least 5 minutes. While chilling, take a shallow plate and spread the cocoa powder (if using). On another small plate or bowl pour about 1 tablespoon chocolate syrup.

  2. 2

    Rim and drizzle

Remove the chilled glass. Dip the rim lightly into the chocolate syrup to coat, then optionally dip into the cocoa powder for a dusted rim. Tilt the glass and use a spoon to drizzle a small amount of chocolate syrup along the inside of the glass in a decorative spiral; set aside in the fridge while you make the cocktail.

  3. 3

Have the grated chocolate or shavings and cherry/curl ready to finish the cocktail after pouring.

Cocktail

  1. 4

    Combine and chill

Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice (about 6 ice cubes). Pour in the vodka (2 oz), chocolate liqueur (1 oz), coffee liqueur (0.5 oz, optional), heavy cream or half-and-half (0.5 oz), and simple syrup or additional chocolate syrup (0.25 oz).

  2. 5

    Shake vigorously

Secure the shaker lid and shake vigorously for 12–18 seconds. The goal is to chill thoroughly and slightly aerate the cream so the drink is silky and slightly frothy.

  3. 6

    Strain and serve

Remove the chilled prepared glass from the fridge. Using a fine strainer (if available) in addition to the shaker strainer, pour the cocktail into the glass, taking care not to disturb the chocolate drizzle too much.

  4. 7

    Garnish and finish

Sprinkle the grated chocolate or shavings over the top and optionally drop a maraschino cherry or place a chocolate curl on the rim. Serve immediately.
