Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Prepare glass

If serving neat (classic), place a chilled snifter, tulip or old-fashioned glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes. If serving on the rocks, add fresh ice cubes to the serving glass now.

  2. 2

    Combine spirits

Measure 2 tablespoons (about 30 ml) cognac or good-quality brandy and 2 tablespoons (about 30 ml) Bénédictine. Pour both into a mixing glass if stirring/chilling, or directly into the prepared serving glass if serving neat.

  3. 3

    Chill (optional)

If you used a mixing glass, fill it with ice and stir gently for about 20–30 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted. Strain into the chilled glass (without ice) for a neat presentation, or pour over the ice if serving on the rocks.

  4. 4

    Finish and garnish

Express the oils of one orange twist by holding the twist over the glass and giving it a quick squeeze or bend so the oils spray over the surface; then drop the twist into the drink or discard per preference. Serve immediately.

  5. 5

    Serving suggestion

Drink slowly to appreciate the herbaceous, honeyed complexity of the Bénédictine balanced by the warmth and fruit of the brandy. For a slightly sweeter drink increase Bénédictine to 1.5:1 (3 tbs Bénédictine to 2 tbs brandy).
