Method

Chill Glass

  1. 1

    Chill

Place the martini glass in the freezer for at least 10 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the drink to ensure the glass is well chilled.

Mix

  1. 2

    Add ice

Fill a mixing glass or cocktail shaker halfway with the ice cubes (about 6 cubes). The ice should be cold and fresh to chill without excessive dilution.

  2. 3

    Measure spirits

Pour 1 oz dry gin and 1 oz dry vermouth into the mixing glass over the ice for a true 50-50 ratio.

  3. 4

    Stir

Using a bar spoon, stir the gin and vermouth with the ice for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full spoon turns). Stirring chills and dilutes the mixture slightly while keeping it clear and silky.

Serve

  1. 5

    Strain

Discard the ice or water from the chilled martini glass. Using a julep strainer or the shaker’s built-in strainer, strain the chilled 50-50 mixture into the glass, leaving the ice behind.

  2. 6

    Garnish

Express the lemon twist over the drink by holding it peel-side down above the glass and giving it a quick twist to release oils, then rub the rim with the peel and drop it into the glass. If you prefer, skewer a green olive on the cocktail pick and rest it on the rim or drop it into the martini.

  3. 7

    Final check

Taste briefly (small sip) to ensure balance. The 50-50 martini should be smooth, aromatic, and slightly softer than classic dry martinis. Serve immediately while cold.
