Cooking Directions
Prepare the Plantains
Peel the green plantains by cutting off the ends and making a vertical slit along the skin. Remove the skin and cut the plantains into 1-inch thick slices.
Fry the First Time
In a deep frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Once hot, add the plantain slices in batches and fry for about 3-4 minutes until they are light golden in color. Remove from the oil and drain on paper towels.
Smash the Plantains
Using the bottom of a flat plate or a tostonera (a plantain press), gently smash each fried plantain slice to about 1/2 inch thickness.
Fry the Second Time
Return the smashed plantains to the hot oil and fry for an additional 2-3 minutes until they are crispy and golden brown. Remove from the oil and drain again on paper towels.
Season and Serve
Sprinkle the tostones with salt, garlic powder, and drizzle with lime juice before serving. Enjoy hot!
