Produce - assorted fruits and vegetables

Method

Prepare produce

  1. 1

    Wash and dry

Thoroughly wash all fruits and vegetables under cold running water. Pat dry with paper towels or use a salad spinner for leafy items. Trim stems and remove any bruised spots.

  2. 2

    Prep fruits

Hull and quarter strawberries if large. Core and cut pineapple into bite-size pieces. Peel, seed and cube cantaloupe and honeydew. Keep grapes on small clusters or remove stems as preferred.

  3. 3

    Prep vegetables

Slice the English cucumber into 1/4-inch rounds. Halve cherry tomatoes if desired. Slice red and yellow bell peppers into 1/4-inch strips. Trim ends off sugar snap peas and halve radishes. Keep baby carrots whole or cut into shorter batons for variety.

Make house ranch dressing

  1. 4

    Combine base

In a medium bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise and sour cream until smooth.

  2. 5

    Add seasonings

Whisk in the buttermilk, lemon juice, minced garlic, onion powder, salt, black pepper and honey (if using) until well combined and slightly loose in texture. Adjust buttermilk to reach desired pourable thickness (add up to 2 tbs more if needed).

  3. 6

    Finish with herbs

Fold in the finely chopped chives, parsley and dill. Taste and adjust seasoning — add a pinch more salt or a squeeze of lemon if needed. Refrigerate at least 15 minutes to allow flavors to meld. Keep chilled until serving.

Assemble platter

  1. 7

Choose a large shallow platter or wooden board. Arrange the mixed salad greens in the center or as a bed across the platter to give height and color.

  2. 8

Group fruits and vegetables in separate clusters around the greens for an attractive, colorful display: place grapes and strawberries together; arrange pineapple, cantaloupe and honeydew in a section; place baby carrots, cucumber rounds, cherry tomatoes, bell pepper strips, sugar snap peas and radishes in distinct clusters. Alternate colors to make the platter visually appealing.

  3. 9

Place the chilled house ranch dressing in a small bowl or ramekin and set it on the platter. Garnish the platter with lemon wedges and fresh mint sprigs. If transporting, cover the dressing separately to keep vegetables crisp.

  4. 10

Serve immediately. Provide small forks or toothpicks for guests to pick fruit and veggies and encourage dipping into the house ranch.
