Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a coupe or martini glass in the freezer for a few minutes, or fill it with ice and cold water while you prepare the cocktail to chill it.

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

Fill a mixing glass or shaker halfway with ice. Add 2 oz rye whiskey, 1 oz sweet vermouth, and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters to the mixing glass.

  3. 3

    Stir to chill and dilute

Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture gently but steadily for about 20–30 seconds (roughly 20–30 full rotations) until well chilled and slightly diluted. Avoid shaking; the Manhattan is traditionally stirred to maintain clarity and a silky texture.

  4. 4

    Prepare glass

If you chilled the glass with ice water, discard the ice/water. If using a frozen glass, remove it from the freezer.

  5. 5

    Strain and garnish

Using a julep or fine strainer, strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe or martini glass. Express an orange peel (optional) over the drink by holding it skin-side down and giving it a quick twist to release oils, then rub the rim with the peel and drop it in or discard. Garnish with 1 maraschino cherry placed in the glass.

  6. 6

    Serve

Serve immediately. Sip and enjoy responsibly.
