Method
Cocktail
- 1
Brew espresso
Brew a shot of espresso (about 1 oz) using an espresso machine or a strong concentrated coffee using an Aeropress or Moka pot. Allow the espresso to rest for 30–45 seconds so it cools slightly and develops a light crema but is still warm.

- 3
Combine ingredients
In a cocktail shaker, add 1 oz of freshly brewed espresso, 2 oz vodka, 1 oz coffee liqueur, and 0.5 oz simple syrup.
- 4
Add ice and dry shake (optional)
If you prefer a frothier crema, first close the shaker and shake vigorously without ice for 8–10 seconds (dry shake). This helps emulsify the espresso and creates more foam.
- 5
Add ice and shake
Open the shaker, add about 1 cup of ice, re-seal, and shake vigorously for 12–18 seconds until the exterior of the shaker is very cold. Proper shaking both chills the drink and creates a glossy crema on top.
- 6
Double strain and serve
If you want a silky texture free of small ice shards or espresso grounds, double-strain the cocktail through the shaker strainer and then a fine mesh strainer into the chilled martini glass.
- 7
Garnish
Float three coffee beans on top of the crema as a classic garnish. Serve immediately.
Optional technique notes
- 8
Adjust sweetness by increasing or decreasing the simple syrup (±0.25 oz). For a richer flavor, substitute part of the vodka with aged rum (replace up to 0.5 oz). Use freshly brewed espresso for best crema and aroma; pre-brewed, cooled espresso will not produce the same foam.
